Paulina Skavova
Paulina Skavova (*8 November 1976, Trutnov) is a Czech sculptor, scenographer, and conceptual artist whose work moves between figurative sculpture, object-based art, and installation. Her practice is characterised by expressive modelling, strong visual energy, and a distinctive combination of physical presence, symbolism, poetry, irony, and exaggeration.
She studied at the Secondary School of Stone and Sculpture in Hořice and later at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under Karel Nepraš and Milan Knížák. Her work reflects both classical sculptural discipline and a strong sense of theatricality, gesture, and narrative. Her artworks are also represented in the collections of the National Gallery Prague.
A significant part of her practice consists of works for public space, including portrait and commemorative sculptures. Alongside her independent artistic practice, she works extensively in scenography, film objects, masks, and props.
Since 2009, she has collaborated with production designer Ondřej Nekvasil on numerous Czech and international productions, including Underworld, Carnival Row, Knightfall, Krypton, and The Wheel of Time. She has also worked with theatre and performance companies, including Spitfire Company.
Skavova’s work often explores contrasts between beauty and unease, fragility and brutality, archetype and personal experience. At the same time, it remains firmly rooted in material, craftsmanship, and precise execution.
