In the 1980s, Milan Knížák created a series of so-called “flat sculptures”, which were initially made from paper and fabric, and later from wooden panels painted with acrylic. The sculptures resembled simplified human figures transformed into a composition of abstract angular and rounded shapes. Knížák aimed to create new forms through the interplay of distinct, boldly coloured surfaces. The design for the wall sculpture Lovers, dating from 1986, represents the artist’s adaptation
of these formal principles into glass.
