The Longing
Edition: 1/6 - red
In the glass relief The Longing, Richard Štipl combines historical imagery with a contemporary exploration of the human psyche. Figures, fragments of bodies and expressive faces come together in a scene poised between reality and dream. Their physical closeness and gestures suggest a narrative whose meaning remains open to the viewer.
The title refers to the theme of longing. It can be read as a reflection on the need for closeness, understanding and fulfilment, but also on the uncertainty that may accompany desire. Štipl’s imagery thus raises questions of human vulnerability and our relationship to what we lack or long for.
The red glass adds another expressive dimension to the relief. Light passing through the coloured material highlights individual details and alters their legibility. The fixed figures thereby acquire a shifting presence that heightens the emotional atmosphere of the work.
