Forbidden Fruit

The folding screen panels represent an imaginary wall in the Garden of Eden and reinterpret a classical theme in a new, intricately detailed way. The central motif of the Original Sin unfolds across all three panels: the serpent, personifying temptation, slithers from the body of Satan as he feigns indifference, yet his clenched fist and claws betray his true intent.

Adam gazes at the fruit from which a young serpent emerges – a warning of both the bite and the fall to come. Eve is trapped in the snake’s embrace and entangled in growing vegetation and her own indecision. The dominant Tree of Knowledge frames the unfolding events, while the head woven from serpents references the ancient Gorgon.
