Seat of Mercy

This relief brings together fragments of personal and creative history into a single layer. Oversized feet inspired by the Zlíchov Altarpiece, a background based on the relief of St. Anne from Český Krumlov, and a soldier from The Kiss of Judas form a strangely compelling visual world that is not meant to be “deciphered”, but rather experienced.

The work also features figures important to the artist’s life: a motif from Afternoon of a Faun, figures borrowed from Francis Bacon’s paintings, the pharaoh Akhenaten, and Batman – Štipl’s first superhero after arriving in Canada. The relief becomes an archetype of human thought and the multiplicity of art history.
