Jiří Černický

Jiří Černický (1966) is a Czech visual artist. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, where he studied in the studios of Miloš Šejn and Jiří David between 1993 and 1997. In 1998, he received the Jindřich Chalupecký Award and is also a recipient of the Soros Prize and the 48th October Salon Award. For many years, he headed the Painting Studio at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague.

Jiří Černický is one of the most prominent representatives of the generation that entered the art scene in the 1990s and responded to the social changes that followed the Velvet Revolution. His work is highly diverse, spanning a wide range of media and themes that often critically reflect consumer society and contemporary perceptions of the world.

In the 1990s, he became known for his project First Mass-Produced Schizophrenia, in which he transformed the facial motif from Edvard Munch’s famous painting into the form of a motorcycle helmet. His works are driven by strong narratives and often have a powerful emotional impact.

Alongside his visual art practice, he also works in book illustration and music.
