On a Knife’s Edge

The object takes the form of a fruit bowl emerging from an ice skate — an object we would normally tighten to keep it firmly secured to the foot. Jiří Černický has long explored the idea of dynamics appearing in contexts where the viewer would least expect it.

The bowl can therefore bring an element of excitement and tension into the home, a space usually associated with calm and stability. The polished glass blade of the skate further emphasises the object’s instability and creates a sense of danger, as if one might actually cut oneself on it.

The inscription on the skate alludes to the “emptiness” of sports clubs.
